Why Study Classics?

What is Classics?

The discipline of Classics encompasses ancient languages — especially Latin and Ancient Greek — but is much more wide ranging. It also need not include any study of language. Classical Civilisation as a subject includes literature, history, philosophy, culture, society, art, and ideas. It is concerned with the ancient Mediterranean world, principally Greece and Rome. However, modern approaches to Classics also look to the interactions of these societies with other parts of the world, such as Anatolia, Persia, and Egypt.

Classics is therefore a broadly-based discipline, which develops a wide range of knowledge and skills.

 Why study Classics?

There are lots of great reasons to study Classics. These include:

  • It is interesting and enjoyable!
  • Classical themes are increasingly popular in contemporary media, such as books, films, television, art, and theatre.
  • The societies of ancient Greece and Rome have had a profound influence on many aspects of world culture. In particular, this includes literature, art, architecture, philosophy, and theatre.
  • Learning about other cultures provides a lens through which to analyse our own culture and society. This can then also be applied to the rest of the contemporary world.
  • Studying the past teaches us about recurring issues and problems that have affected people throughout history.
  • Learning about ancient ideas and attitudes helps us to understand the development of modern thinking.
  • Studying Classics can include studying the origins of democracy in ancient Athens. You will also learn about debates over the best forms of constitution. These have influenced political thinking into the modern day.
  • Studying ancient history confronts us with the limitations of evidence. We must then ask what it is possible to know with certainty about the past.

These are just a few of the reasons we think that studying Classics is so great!
